KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police have confirmed the body of an infant was found in the back of a trash truck Monday morning around 8:15.

FOX 4’s Monica Evans said sanitation workers reported the discovery while they were in the 2800 block of Campbell. They told authorities while working they noticed the baby’s arm sticking out of the trash in the back of the truck.

Police said they do not believe the infant was discarded at that location, but at a previous location on the sanitation route.

“They’d been picking up trash this morning. This is not their first stop, but it’s at this location where they discovered what they believe to be an infant in the back of the truck,” said Matthew Grant with the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department.

Sanitation crews said the route began at 7 a.m., but they would not provide the location of where the route began or which direction it took.

Police would not estimate the age of the infant or say if the child was clothed.

“Obviously we have an innocent life that’s been taken, ” said neighbor Dia Matthews. “I think somebody needs to be held responsible for it, but I obviously think they need help as well.”

A tweet from Police Chief Darrel Forte posted 10:33 credits sanitation workers for their attentiveness.

“I feel for the person who didn’t have any resources or didn’t know resources were in the community and this is how I guess they choose to deal with their problem that they obviously needed help with,” Matthews said.

Investigators have asked for the public’s help so they can find the baby’s mother and talk with her about the circumstances of the baby’s death. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
