SHAWNEE, Kan. — Police have questioned and released a man after they say he hit a cyclist Wednesday morning in Shawnee then kept driving.
Investigators say at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, a driver hit Steve McCrary, 62, as he was cycling westbound on Shawnee Mission Parkway near Vista. Witnesses told police the driver kept going in a white truck with damage on the front.
FOX 4 was unable to reach McCrary’s family Wednesday, but neighbors confirm the avid cyclist was hurt and underwent reconstructive surgery for an injury to his face, among other wounds which include a shattered pelvis. Neighbors tells us McCrary was wearing a helmet.
Wednesday afternoon, police released information that they found and questioned the driver. Investigators told FOX 4 they will work to collect information from the vehicle’s crash data recovery system, which is similar to a black box in an airplane.
Neighbors also told FOX 4 that McCrary biked to the west coast last year and caught an airplane back. The year before, he took a similar ride to Colorado, on a tandem bike with his wife.
As of Wednesday night, McCrary remained in the hospital in critical condition.
