KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The driver of a tractor trailer died Tuesday morning at 78th and Kaw Drive.

Police say the tractor trailer was westbound on Kaw Drive when another vehicle pulled out in front of it. When the tractor-trailer driver pushed on the brakes to avoid the car, the load on the trailer shifted, smashing the cab and crushing the driver.

Authorities don't believe weather was a factor. But say they're hoping to talk to anyone who saw the accident happen.

On Tuesday, FOX 4 spoke with two women who drove up on the accident before emergency crews had arrived at the scene.

“It seemed unreal, very surreal,” said Susan Keller, who along with Andrea Romero drove up on the scene shortly after it happened.

“Just to have drove by and seen that,” said Romero.

“Because he was, like she says, he was fighting to get out,” said Keller.tractor trailer

“It was literally seconds. He was fighting to get out, fighting to get out, fighting to get out and we turned around to come back to try to help him and he was unconscious by the time we even…,” said Romero.

The death happened at about 9 a.m.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation. The name of the driver has not been released, pending family notification.
