KANSAS CITY, Mo. — New information in the case of a missing 20-year-old UMKC student reveals that an officer with the North Kansas City Police Department did stop the missing woman prior to her disappearance, but her steps after the traffic stop concluded are still unclear.

Kansas City Police Department spokesperson Darin Snapp says 20-year-old Toni Anderson got off work around 4:15 a.m. Sunday and was later pulled over by a North Kansas City police officer near the QuikTrip at 9-Highway and 20th Avenue for an illegal lane change.

Snapp says Anderson told the officer she was almost out of gas, and the officer pointed out the nearby QuikTrip.

“So the officer just told her, you know, there’s a gas station right there, gave her a warning for the violation and watched her actually go to the QuikTrip,” Snapp said.

According to Snapp, the investigation has revealed that Anderson was headed to meet friends at a downtown business but never showed.

“After that QuikTrip, it’s almost like she vanished,” Snapp said.

Snapp added that it is unclear why Anderson veered to the north before heading downtown, which is where she also lived. He said officers have been looking at license plate scanners to help them locate her vehicle, but so far they’ve had no matches.

“We’re thinking she might be out of the area,” Snapp said.

Anderson’s boyfriend previously told FOX 4 Anderson’s co-workers at the Chrome entertainment bar on 40-Highway said Anderson mentioned that she was headed to a gas station at 31st and Southwest Boulevard. However, there is no evidence that she made it there. About 30 minutes after she left work, Toni’s friend Roxanne Townsend says she received a text from Toni.

“It was exactly 4:42 when she texted me and said, ‘I just got pulled over again.’ She said ‘again’ because she gets pulled over all the time,” Roxy Townsend said.

The parents of Toni Anderson are heartbroken and desperate for any information that could lead to their missing daughter. They are putting their hope in any news they get.

The Andersons describe their daughter as amazing, independent, and someone who loves kids. They say the UMKC student is a music blogger and often travels for work, but her parents say she is always careful. They’ve been able to stay strong, thanks to the support of so many others.

“A lot of faith, a lot of friends, all of Toni`s friends have been amazing. The authorities have been unbelievable to work with,” said Brian Anderson.

The Andersons say her friends continue to come up with ideas for searches, including getting a volunteer canine unit.

“Everybody`s been so wonderful and supportive and we`re very blessed. We are very blessed to have such good friends and Toni to have such good friends,” said Elizabeth Anderson.

“Let her go. Let her be with us. Let her go have her wonderful life,” she continued.

Her parents also say for insurance purposes they had a GPS tracker on her car, but her father told FOX 4 on Wednesday that the device is no longer working. Police aren’t sure if it malfunctioned or was removed from her vehicle. She drives a 2014 black Ford Focus with Kansas plates: 989 GAX.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to pay for a private investigator to help find Toni. According to her boyfriend, the private investigator will cost $3,000. The rest of the funds will be used as a reward for information leading authorities to Toni. The GoFundMe page says they hope to raise an addition $5,000 for the reward.
