OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — A neighborhood on Switzer between 91st and 95th has a huge mess on its hands. Several construction projects are going on at once. It can have it’s advantages once it’s finished, but getting there could be trying.
Rebecca Hamel is like many people who live in the neighborhood, and Hamel says a major construction project has literally uprooted some of its charm.
“We fell in love with the trees along the streets and in the backyard, big lot sizes, it’s just very friendly easy place to live,” said Hamel.
“Unfortunately there was some tree loss, some mature trees,” explained Charlie Love, with Overland Park Public Works. “We are installing new storm sewers in this neighborhood which will help alleviate flooding issues, in addition to that we are reconstructing Switzer Road from 91st to 95th Street.”
New curbs and sidewalks are also going in. Most of the current ones have been damaged by the trees that once lined the street.
“That species of tree had some roots that caused lot of issues with sidewalks and driveways, actually caused tripping hazards,” said Love.
Many residents say they’re on board, but there are some, like Hamel, who will miss what they had.
“They are replacing trees that they remove, just hope they get the chance to grow and come back to that personality,” said Hamel.
Love says it’s not the first time for a project like this. The last was just to the north along 91st Street.
“I do feel that project gave these homeowners in this neighborhood the before and after, and they know to expect and see the after improvements,” he said.
There is something different with this project, there are several going on at once. A new larger water main is being installed, gas lines rerouted and new street lights are going up as well. Instead of doing one after the other and it dragging on for more than a year, this one will be done in a few months. Residents are ready, but still hoping it gets done ahead of schedule.
