KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two men are behind bars after police say the pair led them through a Southeast Kansas City crime spree.
“We had a street robbery and then we had a lady that was robbed outside of a laundromat,” KCPD Capt. Todd Paulson said.
Witnesses to those crimes called in physical descriptions of the men and the tag number of the tan SUB. Paulson said officers spotted the “suspect vehicle and license plate from the first robbery.” When police started following the pair, the driver overshot the roundabout at Hickman Mills Drive and Longview Road and slammed into a pole. The driver and his male passenger took off running but didn’t make it far.
“One was caught in the trailer area, and the other was caught just outside of it,” Paulson said.
Luis Cortez decided to take advantage of Memorial Day downtime by cleaning his auto repair shop. He was working when he said he heard brakes screeching and a loud crash.
“I hear noise every day from officers, or police, but I’ve never seen anything so close to me,” Cortez said.
Cortez ran outside, watched two men run from the wreck, then saw police speed by. His shop’s security cameras caught the crash.
“I checked on the camera, to see if there is something important. I have to show it to somebody,” said Cortez.
He said he’s glad it’s over, but he doesn’t like the stolen peace of mind he said the suspects took with them.
“We don’t want anything to happen to anybody else. I don’t like that happening in my neighborhood.”
Another witness who didn’t want to go camera told Fox 4 she too heard the crash and ran over to the SUV. By the time she got there, both men had taken off, but she said she saw one gun on the dashboard and another in the passenger’s floorboard.
As of Monday afternoon, police hadn’t released the names of the two men in custody.
