After resurrecting the “Star Trek" franchise in 2009 by taking it back to its roots, filmmaker J.J. Abrams boldly goes where he’s gone before with "Star Trek Into Darkness.” Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise embark on a manhunt for a rogue officer who is bent on destroying the Federation.

The crew of officers is back intact, with Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock and Zoe Saldana as Uhuru. Benedict Cumberbatch, best known as TV’s “Sherlock,” is memorable as a malevolent former Star Fleet officer.

A few purists may cringe, but there’s more than enough action and eye candy to please most Trekkers and non-Trekkers alike. Now that Abrams has changed the timeline, he can take the franchise wherever he wants. Judging by "Star Trek Into Darkness,” most fans will gladly go along for the ride.

Shawn says, "Yes, this installment is much like the first. But the reboot was solid. So is this episode. There is more intellectual swagger than over-the-top action and serious attention to detail in the character development department. That's more refreshing than a summer shandy.

"Star Trek Into Darkness" will more than satisfy the masses. Clever how it stays close to the TV show's origins while also moving far away and running on own its own terms."

“Chasing Ice” is a visually arresting documentary, following photographer James Balog’s efforts to record evidence of global climate change. The first two thirds of the film is fairly dull, a behind-the-scenes look at Balog's 2007 Extreme Ice Survey, chronicling his camera setups in Greenland and fund-raising efforts.

But the film's final reel, which shows time-lapse documentation of glacier recession, is truly remarkable…and scary. Now THIS is a horror movie.
