KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A woman living in an apartment complex just off the Plaza told police an intruder climbed into bed with her and sexually assaulted her. The assault happened at a complex in the 4800 block of Belleview Avenue in Kansas City, Mo., during early morning hours this past weekend during the Plaza Art Fair.

Police haven’t arrested anyone yet, but know exactly who they’re looking for after the suspect dropped his ID inside the apartment and the victim was able to snap several pictures of him on her cell phone before he ran off.

One of those pictures was distributed to other residents so they could be on the lookout, but FOX 4 is not revealing his identity because he has not been charged with the crime yet.

The intruder got into an apartment through an unlocked backdoor, according to police.

A woman inside told officers she was asleep upstairs and thought the man she was spending the night with had returned and crawled back into bed with her; But it was the intruder, who police said inappropriately touched her before she realized he was a stranger.

The woman told police she jumped out of bed and tried to lock herself in an adjoining bathroom, but the man followed. It was only after she started yelling for him to leave that he turned around, walked downstairs and went outside.

Police said the woman followed him outside, where the man became “verbally confrontational” and that’s when she snapped several pictures of him on her cell phone.

No one answered the door Thursday afternoon where the crime happened, but several residents said they got the notice from the complex owner.

“[It’s] scary to me as a woman that someone can easily just walk in, especially on a busy street, right across the street from a hotel, with so much going on,” said resident Macee Gerstner.

“Definitely make sure my doors are locked and be a little bit more aware of my surroundings when i am going to and from.”

Again, FOX 4 is not revealing the man’s name because he’s not been arrested or charged yet. However, online records show he’s a registered sex offender who’s been convicted of sexual battery, burglary and drug possession.
