TOPEKA, Kan. — The only Kansas Democrat in Congress announced Tuesday that she will vote to impeach President Donald Trump.
Freshman Rep. Sharice Davids said she supports both articles of impeachment drafted by fellow Democrats over Trump’s effort to get Ukraine to investigate Democratic political rival and former Vice President Joe Biden. The first accuses Trump of abusing his power as president and the second says he obstructed Congress’ investigation of him by ordering administration officials and agencies to defy congressional subpoenas.
“The evidence uncovered by the House impeachment inquiry is overwhelming. And the facts are uncontested,” Davids said in a statement, adding that impeachment is “not what I came to Congress to do.”
Trump narrowly lost Davids’ Kansas City-area district in 2016, but Republicans already have made Davids’ backing of the impeachment inquiry an issue ahead of her 2020 re-election race.
Kansas GOP Reps. Ron Estes, of Wichita; Roger Marshall, of western Kansas, and Steve Watkins, of eastern Kansas, have strongly criticized the impeachment inquiry and suggested it is highly partisan.
Estes called the charges in the impeachment articles “unfounded.” Both he and Marshall said Democrats are attempting to overturn Trump’s 2016 victory.
“This will be remembered as nothing more than a pathetic political stunt,” Marshall said.
