SHAWNEE, Kan. — Police in Shawnee have seen a recent spike in auto thefts and burglaries. Since the beginning of last June there have been 26 auto thefts and 35 auto burglaries in the city. The crimes have been concentrated west of I-435, though they have been reported city-wide.

Thieves have been targeting vehicles with unlocked doors during the overnight hours. It has taken anywhere from hours to days to recover the vehicles that have been stolen. The police are encouraging citizens to:

  • Remove all valuables from cars
  • Remove all keys from cars including spare keys
  • Lock all car doors

Police said that since 2012, 84 percent of auto burglaries in the city have happened to vehicles with unlocked doors. Anyone who has information about an auto theft or burglary is encouraged to call the Shawnee Police Department at (913) 631-2155 or the TIPS Hotline at 474-TIPS(8477).
