SHAWNEE, Kan. — Shawnee police are now investigating a homicide after finding a woman dead in an apartment Sunday.

At around 5:50 p.m., officers were called to an apartment complex near 74th and Flint street in Shawnee, Kansas, in regard to a medical emergency.

Upon arrival, officers heard the sound of possible gunshots from inside the apartment building and witnessed someone leave the scene.

Kathleen Dampier, a 25 year-old woman, was found dead inside the apartment with apparent gunshot wounds. Shawnee police originally reported the victim was 24 years old.

Two people police believe are involved were taken into custody, and on Monday, the department said one suspect is in custody pending charges.

It was a terrifying reality for Noelle Martinez who has lived at the complex for 3 years.

“It’s definitely very scary. I didn’t think something like that would happen so close to home. So it’s a little unnerving, especially since I’m expecting in January and my kids are going to be around here, so it’s a little unsettling” she said.

Martinez said murders happen everywhere you just must always be aware of your surroundings.

“You can try to escape this kind of stuff, but you never really know who you’re around and what’s going to happen at any given moment. I’m always looking behind my back. You never know with people,” she said.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Shawnee Police Department at 913-631-2150 or TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
