Child among 4 hit in Kansas City shooting that left one person dead

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A shooting at Prospect and Gregory near a Church's Chicken just after 8 p.m. on Thursday has left three people wounded and one man dead.

Police said a total of four people were shot, one fatally. One of the victims is a child under the age of 5, who reportedly has life-threatening injuries. The other two victims are a woman and man, both in critical condition. Those victims were taken to an area hospital.

Another child was also in the parking lot but was not injured.

"This is a devastating scene, not only for the people that live in this area but also for the officers and detectives that had to respond here tonight," said Sgt. Kari Thompson, Kansas City, Mo. Police spokesperson.

Police said there was some sort of argument among two adults before shots rang out.

There were several people at the Church's Chicken who witnessed the shooting and were talking to police.

Sgt. Kari Thompson: "Really, Kansas City?"

"What can you say? We're all devastated. We're all speechless. We all have children. We have nieces. We have nephews. We have cousins. Our children aren't safe, Kansas City? Really? It's awful," said Thompson.

The deceased victim was later identified as 19-year-old Davyon Coates.
