LONDON — New research proves this could be one of the best reasons to kick the habit: smoking doesn’t relieve stress, but quitting does.
That’s according to a new report out of the U.K.
It began with nearly 500 people participating in a smoking cessation program, which involved nicotine patches and attending two-monthly appointments, the Daily Mail reported.
Six months later, 68 out of the 491 people were still abstaining and said they were less anxious than before.
But researchers say those who gave up and failed were more stressed than when they began.
“The belief that smoking is stress-relieving is pervasive but almost certainly wrong,” researchers told the paper.
