Supermarkets notice increase in demand for healthy foods

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —  A new study says Americans are finally eating healthier.

The research study out from the Hudson Institute shows that there has been a shift in buying trends when Americans head to the grocery store.

Between 2009 and 2013, Americans chose healthier and lower-calorie foods about 60 percent of the time.

“So if you don’t get on the bandwagon with these products you’re actually leaving money on the table, ” Hank Cardello of the Hudson Institute.  “So it would just be smart business for the supermarket industry to jump in, put more emphasis, put more of these products on display, make them more visible to the consumer.”

The study, which encompassed nearly 6,000 stores, says that even though people have increased the amount of healthy foods they are consuming,  children are still not eating as healthy as they should.
