LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- Three years ago, Apple’s iPad hit the scene and changed the way think about computing.

Today, the iPad still continues to be the tablet to beat, but there are plenty of other alternatives. We’re listing our favorite picks of tablets for the 2012 holiday season.

The iPad now comes in two versions with the regular size starting at $500 and the mini starting at $300.

Though it’s on the more expensive side, you’ll get the best choice of apps and accessories. Also of note, consider going cellular if you’ll be using the iPad on-the-go.

The Nexus by Google is a considerably cheaper option starting at only $200. However the app market is still second to Apple’s and the accessories can be harder to find.

The Nexus comes in two sizes, a 7 inch and a 10 inch.

Surface by Microsoft is a cross between a laptop and tablet.

“It’s a great gift because it can do all the fun and games like Netflix and Xbox music and video, as well as do the great stuff like Microsoft Office when you need to do school work or business work” said Jay Paulus, director of product marketing at Microsoft for Windows.

You’re taking a chance on something new with Surface, but it has arguably one of the best tablet interfaces out there.

The Kindle Fire HD is a good bet if you’re a fan of Amazon. It’s cheap and packed with Amazon’s digital books, music, and videos. However you only get access to select Android apps within Amazon’s app marketplace.

Finally, if you’re not sure a full-fledged tablet is what you want, consider the Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

It’s a combination of a cell phone and a tablet that still fits into your pocket or purse. It even includes a stylus that lets you draw notes.

With all the different options out there, just remember before you put down your credit card make sure the tablet does everything you want.
