SHAWNEE, Kan. — Police in Shawnee are investigating after a teenager was shot in an apartment complex Thursday morning.

The shooting happened at the Fox Run Apartments in the 7600 block of Goddard Street around 1:30 a.m.

Shawnee police say the girl was shot once in the upper leg and taken to a local hospital for treatment.  As of 6 a.m. she had been released and was cooperating with police.

Police believe the shooter is also a teenager and lives nearby in Merriam.  Officers from Merriam, Overland Park, and Lenexa were part of a large perimeter set up around the complex.

Police are not sure of the relationship between the shooter and the victim, but they think the suspected shooter was invited over to the victim’s house.

“Pretty broken story at this point,” Major Dan Tennis with the Shawnee Police department said. “A lot of work to do, a lot of people that were in the condominium. There were several adults upstairs asleep, several of the younger people who were downstairs were it occurred at, and we’re not getting a real straight story from any of them.”

No suspect description has been released, but officers did say in a news release that they think they know who they are looking for and were working to locate him as of 7:20 a.m.
