LAFAYETTE COUNTY, Mo. -- The Missouri Highway Patrol says a firefighter was killed and another was seriously hurt in a crash on Monday night that happened just north of Wheatley Road in Mayview. According to a crash report, Jeffery Sanders, 55, was killed, and another firefighter, Jacob Hayward, 33, was taken by helicopter to Research Medical Center just after 6 p.m.

The  crash report says that the 59-year-old driver of a 2004 Ford rear ended a vehicle that was stopped in the roadway. That vehicle then struck a third vehicle, a 1978 Ford,  that was also stopped.

The impact caused that third vehicle to strike two firefighters who were standing nearby and loading up their gear. The firefighters had just finished putting out a fire involving a tree limb that may have ignited from a downed power line.

The firefighters then got caught underneath the vehicle that hit them as it traveled down an embankment.

Sanders was pronounced dead and the Hayward was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver who caused the crash wasn't hurt.

The Mayview Fire Department lowered their flags to half-staff on Tuesday.

"Please keep the family, agency, as well as the other injured firefighter in your thoughts and prayers," the Missouri Fire Service Funeral Assistance Team posted to Facebook.
