WICHITA, Kan. — A convicted murderer, accused of fatally stabbing a child Friday morning, critically injuring the girl’s sister and a woman whose care they were in, has been taken into custody. Hassan Wright, 49, has served time in prison for murder. He was sentenced in 1989 for second-degree murder and aggravated battery in Wyandotte County. He later served time for burglary and aggravated battery in Sedgwick County in 2005. He was paroled in Sedgwick County in March of this year.
According to KAKE-TV in Wichita, a woman in her mid-20s and a girl, age 5 to 7, were found with multiple stab wounds in a vehicle in a parking lot near Lincoln and Oliver. That child died. At around 9 a.m., a second girl, the sister of the girl who died, was found with multiple stab wounds wandering in a field. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Officers were called at around 6:40 a.m. Friday to an injury accident in a parking lot of a shopping center. The red Jeep the woman and children were in had crashed into a parked car in the parking lot. Police arrived on scene to find the woman and girl with multiple stab wounds.
Police said they could not confirm at the time if it was road rage. Police said there was no known connection between the victims and suspect.
Sgt. Nikki Woodrow said the girl died at a local hospital. The woman was last listed in critical condition and was undergoing surgery, however they said initially she was alert enough to be able to walk and find help.
Police say they were quickly able to release the picture of the suspect and thanked the media for the assistance in getting the picture out. An alert citizen saw it and called 911, telling investigators that Wright would possibly be at the location where police arrested him without incident. He has not been charged.
During a news conference (posted below in a Facebook video) police said they are searching for a second person of interest in Friday morning’s stabbings. His name: Antonio Ray. Age 27. He stands 5-foot-5 inches and weighs 140 pounds.
Sgt. Nikki Woodrow said Ray is considered armed and dangerous.
Records show Wright lives at an address in Haysville.
