KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Three members of the Greatest Generation spoke about their experience serving during World War II on Wednesday at the Kansas City Public Library on the Plaza.

Henry Bloch from H&R Bloch, lawyer Ed Matheny, and Bill Dunn, Sr. from JE Dunn Construction all served in WWII.

They shared their stories from the war. Matheny said his service in the war made it easier to handle difficult things during the rest of his life, and Bloch said without being in the war- H&R Bloch would have never become a business.

He says he’s been lucky in life, and even luckier to be alive after what he went through in the war.

“We were shot up all the time, we lost engines every time we flew, the plane barely made it back, then they patched it up, and we flew again,” said Bloch.

This year marks the 70th anniversary since the end of WWII.

The Truman Library Institute offered this program, and will be offering more throughout the year to commemorate the anniversary.
