KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two people died Monday afternoon in a crash in the area of Independence Ave. and Bennington Ave.

Kansas City police said a gold car heading east of U.S. Highway -24 was racing a silver car on the bridge when the driver of the gold car crossed the center line and hit a truck.

Both the driver of the gold car and the truck died at the scene. The driver of the silver car fled.

Witnesses told investigators that prior to the crash, both the gold car and the silver car crossed the double yellow lines to pass slower eastbound traffic.

The families of the victims have not yet been identified.

The crash shut down U.S. Highway 24 for nearly three hours while police conducted their investigation.
