Two face charges in teen’s ATV death

PAOLA, Kan. — It was supposed to be a night for friends to get together and have some fun.  But a combination of alcohol, underage teens and an all-terrain vehicle turned deadly for Tyler Rathbun, 17, of Westwood.

Two Johnson County teenagers appeared in court Thursday morning to face charges connected to the deadly ATV accident

The accident happened on Nov. 25, 2012 in a Miami County filed off of Victory Road.

Rahtbun, a senior at Shawnee Mission East High School and the captain of the school’s soccer team, died in the crash.

After an extensive investigation, the Miami County District Attorney charged William Sutherland, 18, with aggravated endangering of a child and unlawfully hosting minors consuming alcohol.

Another teenager, Taylor Sheets, 18, of Prairie Village, was also charge with involuntary manslaughter in the case.  On Thursday, she asked for a court-appointed attorney.  She’s scheduled to be back before a judge at 9:00 a.m. on June 6.

Sutherland’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on August 20.
