KANSAS CITY, Kan. .–Two military families from the metro received the gift of transportation Wednesday through Progressive’s annual car giveaway,

The insurance company worked closely with the Veterans of Foreign Wars to find the neediest military families across the country.

The Smiley family from Salina, Kan., was one of them. They lost their car four years ago when the economy took a tumble.

“Chris and I walk about six miles to work every morning,” said wife and mother Allison Smiley. “We clock in at 5:30 a.m., so that means we leave the house at 3:30 a.m. to get there on time. The kids walk two and a half miles to and from school, so we spend a lot of time just getting places.”

Chad Brewer and his family who live in Overland Park were awarded the second car.

“My truck’s transmission had gone out. I was going through some personal things with life basically,” said Chad. “Somebody at the Veterans of Foreign Wars saw everything that was going on, and put my name in for the giveaway.”

Brewer can’t even put into words what this gift means for his family. He was almost speechless during the interview.

“Ask me again tomorrow when I’m not overwhelmed,” he joked.

For these families who dedicate their lives to service, the gift is more than just a car.

“It’s a piece of mind for a good, long time,” said Smiley.

It’s helping them to get on their feet and off their feet all at the same time.

The car giveaway is an annual event but because Progressive wanted to focus on military families this year, they decided to hold the car giveaway in June rather than November, as it is Military Appreciation Month.
