KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police are investigating a double shooting that's left a teen critically injured Friday night.

Officials said the shooting happened near 63rd Street and The Paseo.

According to KC police, one of the victims said they were in an SUV in the area when a man started shooting at them as they were driving. They lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the side of a thrift store in the area.

A teen was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition; the other victim suffered minor injuries.

"He was taken to the hospital to be checked out," Capt. Tim Hernandez said of the second teen victim. "Right now, we don't know how many shots were fired at the vehicle, and at this time we don't have any confirmed information as far as suspect information."

"It was crazy and scary," said Alex Jefferson.

Jefferson works at a title loan business across the street from where the two teenagers crashed. She said when the gunfire rang out several of her scared customers stayed inside her business to keep safe.

"There's too many people out there causing all this gun violence. I would definitely not walk around these streets if you don't have to. But if you do and encounter something like that, I would do what my customers did. Seek a safe haven and try to get down. It can be pretty dangerous," Jefferson said.
