LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. – Police are looking for two women they say tried to steal a senior citizen’s purse outside Wal-Mart near Highway 291 and NE Tudor Road Tuesday around noon. Good Samaritans stepped in and stopped the two women from getting away in a vehicle, forcing them to stop driving and hand the purse back to the victim.

“They are going to get caught, and I am going to make sure I go to court and testify,” said Jim Wilkins, who witnessed the entire thing. “I’m going to see to it that they get as much time as the law will allow.”

Wilkins said he and other shoppers jumped in to block the suspect’s car and took pictures of the two women inside. He said he heard the woman scream that somebody took off with her purse. The pictures were quickly handed over the police.

“It took us all about 30 seconds to realize these are two people we dealt with extensively,” said Sergeant Chris Depue. “Our detectives are seeking warrants right now for those folks and we will have them in custody soon.”

Wilkins girlfriend, Dawn Zahorak, said she immediately took pictures of the two women, the vehicle they were driving in and its license plates.

“I just started taking it out, click, click, click,” she said. “I started to walk around the car and that’s when I got pictures of their face.”

FOX 4 cannot show the suspect’s faces because they have not yet been formally charged with a crime. Zahorak said the two women tried to hide their faces, and after handing over the purse they sped away.

Police said the victim is a senior citizen who just moved to Kansas City from Arkansas. They said she is shaken up after the incident but grateful to the good Samaritans who stepped in to help.

Police said on Thursday that the driver of the vehicle has been arrested and is awaiting charges, and the passenger has been identified and a pick up order for her arrest has been issued.
