OLATHE, Kan. — A veteran has a warning about scam artists who are targeting those who served in the military.
The latest victim filed a complaint Wednesday with the Johnson County District Attorney. 70-year-old Donald Churchill served three years in the Army during Vietnam.
He received a phone call from a Washington D.C. area code Tuesday. The caller claimed to be from the IRS and said Churchill owed thousands in back taxes. If he did not pay immediately agents were on their way to take him to prison.
Churchill said the caller knew things about him that he figured only the government would know, including where he had worked and the details of his military service.
“The man tells you, ‘I know what you were doing in March of 2012,'” Churchill said. “You think, ‘Ok.’ He told me other things about myself and my family and I’m thinking, ‘how do you know this?’ I’m beginning to think to myself, ‘maybe this is legit.'”
The caller instructed Churchill to buy prepaid credit cards from a local store and load them with thousands of dollars that he supposedly owed. Churchill gave the caller the card numbers and security information before mailing the cards to a U.S. Treasury Department address, which appears to be genuine.
By the time the cards arrive, Churchill figures his money already will have been spent.
Churchill said Olathe police told him another veteran has reported a similar scam. Although he never expects to see his money again, he wants to make sure no one else is fooled.
