KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police were called to break up a fight between a man and his girlfriend in the River Market last night. It ended with a police officer opening fire on the man.
The man and his girlfriend were in a parking lot in the 400 block of Main street in the River Market area.
Perry Jordan and his friend saw the whole thing from a nearby car and heard the man and police officer arguing.
“So we stopped at that point. The officer has somebody held at gunpoint, giving him commands, and you can kind of hear there is an argument going on between them. It looks like maybe he might have moved or done something wrong and the officer shot him. He was definitely at fault and not complying with orders,” Jordan recalled.
According to police the suspect pulled out a sharp weapon and charged to the officers.
“It happened so fast. The officers, as soon as they approached him, he turned around and saw the officers. That is when he pulled out the weapon and charged to them, so the officer didn’t even have a chance to converse with him,” Darin Snapp with the Kansas City Police Department said.
Witnesses told FOX 4 that the officer and suspect were only about 5 feet apart when the man charged and the officer shot him.
“You could hear him saying ‘I can’t move! I can’t move!’ We just kind of sat there for a second and were like, ‘did this really happen?’ We weren’t sure if it was a taser that was making the noise, but we saw the muzzle flash and we were like, ‘he definitely got shot,'” Jordan said.
“We go through a six-month academy. That’s all they do is throw you in these high-stress situations and the biggest part about the whole thing is like I said, on this deal the officers didn’t even have a chance to converse with the gentleman to find out exactly what was wrong with him,” Snapp explained.
At 10:30 p.m. the Kansas City Street Car sent out a rider alert and temporarily shut down all service. Jordan said from his vantage point, it appeared there wasn’t much more the officer could do.
“I don’t feel the police were out of line at all, by any means. I mean, they gave more than enough time to give commands before, it just wasn’t a quick draw and shoot. I feel the officers definitely acted in reason,” Jordan said.
No officers were injured in the incident last night. The suspect is in serious condition tonight and an area hospital.
The investigation is of course ongoing.
