KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An 81-year-old woman went the wrong way onto I-35 Sunday causing an accident that shutdown the interstate for nearly four hours.

Witnesses told police a black Hyundai Sonata, driven by the woman, got on the highway around 2:30 p.m. at the Broadway exit going southbound in the northbound lanes.

As her car got onto I-35, a white pick-up truck hit her head-on — which flipped the truck causing it to hit another car. A third car swerved to try and avoid the truck, which hit the front of the woman’s car.

The 81-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Her name has not been released.

There have been 71 deadly traffic accidents this year, compared to 66 in 2011, Kansas City, Mo., police said.
