KANSAS CITY, Mo. --Kansas City, Mo., police are still looking for the suspect who robbed a woman then shot her as she was walking in Wesport early Thursday morning.

Police say the woman was walking with a man near the intersection of Wyandotte and Westport Road around 2:15 a.m. when the suspect approached them with a gun. The suspect took the woman's cell phone, and then fired the gun at her.

The woman was taken to the hospital and was having surgery with life-threatening injuries. The man was not injured.

Hours after the woman was shot, FOX 4's Megan Dillard learned the man is the victim's boyfriend. He works at the Blind Tiger, 3945 Main St. After the man got off work, he and the victim walked to Dave's Stagecoach Inn, 316 Westport Rd.,  and were on their way back to his car when the gunman confronted them. "I seen a girl laying on the ground, and I seen a guy and a girl trying to help her," witness Ryan McKeefery said. "As I got closer, I can see all the blood coming from the girl."

Police have not given a suspect description nor have they said what was taken from the couple. FOX 4 will provide those details as soon as they are available.

"It doesn't make me fearful to come down here, but it definitely makes me on guard," McKeefery said. "You never think something like this could happen. Although, it does. So it definitely won't stop me from coming down, but it's definitely going to make me think twice about what area I park my car and what areas I go to."

Police ask if you have any information to call Crime Stoppers at (816) 474-TIPS.
