SHAWNEE, Kan. – Much of downtown Shawnee went into lockdown in the minutes following the attempted robbery and shootout at a gun shop there on Friday.

Dodge City Beef LLC is a couple blocks from She’s A Pistol, the shop where the chaotic scene unfolded. One of the meat market’s employees told FOX 4 he saw more than two-dozen police cars fly by and heard continuous sirens. He said they closed their doors and watched, employees and customers side by side, taking in what happened just around the corner.

“It’s terrible news, they’re very good people, just trying to run their small business and it just hurts. It’s scary. Shawnee, downtown, it’s just a scary thing to happen and hits really close to home being a small business,” Bernard Pflumm said.

Pflumm said the small-business community in Shawnee is a close one and that the owners of She’s A Pistol are well-known and liked in the area.
