KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A wrong-way driver traveling down Prospect took off when police tried to pull him over, officers say.

Police gave chase, and the man eventually wrecked at 25th and Chesnut, crashing into four parked cars. The driver had to extracted before he was taken to an area hospital where he later died.

“It’s a really an unfortunate circumstance for everyone involved,” Sgt. Bill Mahoney with Kansas City police. “One of the criteria is weighing danger to public vs. the need to get this person stopped. It’s a judgement call by the officer. You see someone driving the wrong way, it’s very dangerous when you believe that person is a drunk driver and is operating in a manner like that. It’s imperative to try to get him stopped.”

Police suspected the driver was intoxicated, but that has not been confirmed. The driver’s identity has not been released and no other information has been made available at this time.
