KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 7-year-old girl pulled from a pool at Oceans of Fun last week has died, according to the owners of the park.
It happened as Stephanie Craig was about to leave the Coconut Cove part of the park Tuesday evening, July 5th with her husband and two young boys.
“Right as we’re packing up, we heard whistles, which I will say with the lifeguards, how one of the ways that we figured out that they communicate with each other is that they whistle,” Craig said in an interview with FOX4 Tuesday.
After hearing the whistles, Craig said she saw a bunch of people charging toward the pool to try to get the young girl out of the water.
“Being only five foot, you can only see so much,” Craig said.
A lifeguard pulled the girl from Coconut Cove pool at 6:45 p.m. July 5.
The lifeguard pulled the girl from the water and the park’s EMS staff began administering CPR. The Kansas City Fire Department arrived shortly after and continued caring for the girl.
She was taken to Children’s Mercy in critical condition.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of her passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time,” Cedar Fair said in a release.
Craig has season passes, and she takes her kids three days a week. She says there were quite a few people by the crocodiles and the hippos that July 5th, but in the middle of Coconut Cove, it wasn’t super packed.
“I don’t know what happened,” Craig continued. “It just breaks my heart, and that is a parent’s worst fear to have something like that happen to them ya know?”
The incident is concerning to parent Terrenda Rosenberger, whose daughter was injured at the park seven years ago.
“It’s very very sad,” Rosenberger said Tuesday. “I’ve heard too many stories that sound the same coming from Oceans of Fun.”
The young girl’s name hasn’t been publicly released.
Cedar Fair closed the Coconut Cove area of the park temporarily following the incident.
