PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas — The 13th-ranked Missouri Tigers escaped the Bahamas with a win on Saturday night, outlasting the Virginia Commonwealth Rams 68-65 for third place in the Battle 4 Atlantis.
Missouri (5-1, 3-0 home) jumped out to an 11-6 lead, but VCU answered with a 17-5 run to take a 23-16 lead at the 6:53 mark. Mizzou closed the half on a 14-5 run, and senior forward Alex Oriakhi’s dunk gave the Tigers a 30-28 lead at the break.
VCU (3-3, 1-0 away) took their first lead of the second half with 3:28 left to play.
After several lead changes down the stretch, Mizzou took the lead for good on a three-pointer by junior guard Phil Pressey with 1:18 remaining. Pressey also provided an insurance floater to go up 68-65 with :15 seconds left.
Five different players scored in double figures for the Tigers. Senior forward Laurence Bowers posted a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Pressey added 11 points and eight assists. Mizzou outrebounded VCU 36-25.
Missouri will host Appalachian State next Saturday afternoon at Mizzou Arena.
