ST. LOUIS — Three of their players posted double-doubles, and the Missouri Tigers cruised to an 82-73 victory over the Illinois Fighting Illini on Saturday night in the annual Braggin’ Rights game at Scottrade Center.
After several lead changes, Illinois took a 28-24 lead with 5:59 to play in the first half. Missouri answered with a 17-7 run to finish the half.
The Tigers (10-1, 0-0 away) led 41-35 at the break.
The Fightin’ Illini (12-1, 7-0 home) stormed back in the second half, and held a five-point lead with 8:06 to play. Mizzou responded with a 13-2 run, and took a 70-64 lead on junior guard Phil Pressey’s jumper with 4:13 left.
Illinois pulled within two points with 2:15 to play, but Mizzou maintained the lead for the rest. Senior guard Brandon Paul led the Illini with 23 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
Along with three double-doubles, the Tigers had four different players score in double digits. Senior forward Laurence Bowers finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists. Senior forward Alex Oriakhi posted 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Pressey dropped 12 points and 11 assists, and sophomore guard Jabari Brown rounded out the Tigers’ balanced scoring attack with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Both teams shot under 40% from the field, and under 27% from three-point range. Mizzou crushed Illinois on the boards, outrebounding the Illini 51-29.
Missouri hits the road for a showdown with the UCLA Bruins at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles on Friday night.
