LAWRENCE, Kan. — Scoring early and often, the ninth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks crushed the Richmond Spiders 87-59 on Tuesday night at Allen Fieldhouse.
Kansas (9-1, 6-0 home) went on an 18-0 run in the first half, and took a 33-11 lead at the 4:26 mark. The Jayhawks led 39-18 at halftime.
Richmond (9-3, 2-3 away) shot 25% across the board in the first half, and didn’t get to the free throw line once. They were also outrebounded in the early stages 23-8.
The Spiders managed to limit the damage in the second half, as they hovered around a 20-point deficit for as long as they could. A 20-3 run by the Jayhawks provided the knockout punch. Senior guard Travis Releford’s three-pointer gave the Hawks a 71-35 lead with 6:19 to play.
KU outrebounded the Spiders 43-24. The Jayhawks shot 59% from the field, and 37.5% from three-point range.
Senior center Jeff Withey led the Jayhawks with a double-double, finishing with 17 points, 13 rebounds, and four blocks. Redshirt freshman Ben McLemore had 14 points and seven rebounds. KU sophomore guard Naadir Tharpe hit a trio of 3’s and finished with 11 points.
Kansas hits the road to take on the seventh-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes at Value City Arena on Saturday.
