KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals announced Tuesday that they have requested unconditional release waivers on infielder Omar Infante. Should he go unclaimed, he would become an unrestricted free agent on Thursday and could sign with any club. Infante, 34, was designated for assignment on June 15.
Last week, FOX 4 reported that the Royals had decided to move on without Infante. The third-year, second baseman was effectively removed from the 40-man roster. At that time, Infante had started only twice in the last 17 games. The Royals still owe Infante about $14 million on his current contract.
Whit Merrifield is now the full-time second baseman.
