Terry took over as the Longhorns’ interim head coach after Texas fired Chris Beard weeks after a domestic violence arrest. Terry has serves as a head coach at two prior schools, first at Fresno State for seven years then Texas-El Paso for three.
With Fresno State, Terry compiled a 126-108 record and had three 20-win seasons with one NCAA tournament appearance. He left to join UTEP, but totaled just 37 wins in three seasons. Terry resigned from UTEP in 2021 to join Texas as an assistant.
As interim head coach, Terry led Texas to a Big 12 tournament championship and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Longhorns reached the Elite Eight but fell to Miami in the Midwest Region final on Sunday night.
Despite Terry’s success this year, Texas remained reluctant to remove the interim tag until the season was over. As a result, other teams reportedly had interest in him, and the coach gained media support to keep the Longhorns job.
