OCEANSIDE, Calif. — NFL legend Junior Seau was found dead inside his Oceanside, Calif., home on Wednesday, according to Oceanside police. Officers at the scene said it appears Seau died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police found Seau’s body in a bedroom with a single gunshot wound to his chest. A handgun was located near his body. In a news conference, police said they are investigating his death as a suicide.
According to TMZ, Seau, 43, allegedly sent text messages to his ex-wife and three kids, saying “Love you” on Tuesday. TMZ reports that his family members all responded to the texts and never suspected anything was wrong.
TMZ said Seau’s mother, Louisa Seau, arrived at the scene and became so hysterical, a police officer had to pick her up and carry her away. Clearly distraught, she later addressed the media and expressed her appreciation for the fans who showed up in support. She also expressed the agony of losing a son.
“I pray to God, take me, take me! Leave my son! But it’s too late,” she said. “I don’t understand. I don’t know anything, why this happened to me? Who would do this to my son?”
Following Louisa’s statement, a police officer addressed the media and said Seau’s death is being investigated as a suicide. Sources close to Seau tell TMZ they did not see any signs of depression in recent weeks.
Seau’s sister, Annette, spoke briefly at the news conference and asked for peace and privacy while her family mourns.
